Overview

What it is

Trigger finger occurs when a flexor tendon has trouble gliding through its pulley at the base of the finger.

Symptoms

The finger may click, catch, lock, or feel sore in the palm. De Quervain’s affects tendons near the thumb side of the wrist and causes a different pattern of pain.

How we diagnose it

Trigger finger occurs when a flexor tendon has trouble gliding through its pulley at the base of the finger. The finger may click, catch, lock, or feel sore in the palm. De Quervain’s affects tendons near the thumb side of the wrist and causes a different pattern of pain.

Non-surgical treatment

  • Activity changes and anti-inflammatory care
  • Corticosteroid injection

Surgery

  • Small-incision trigger release when symptoms persist

What recovery looks like

After release, finger motion begins early. The incision commonly heals in about 2 weeks, with soreness and swelling improving over the following weeks.
