What it is

A hand or wrist fracture can cause pain, swelling, bruising, deformity, or loss of motion.

Symptoms

Some fractures heal well in a brace or cast. Others need careful reduction or surgery to restore alignment and function.

How we diagnose it

A hand or wrist fracture can cause pain, swelling, bruising, deformity, or loss of motion. Some fractures heal well in a brace or cast. Others need careful reduction or surgery to restore alignment and function.

Non-surgical treatment

  • Bring your ER or urgent-care X-rays and report
  • Splinting, casting, and repeat imaging

Surgery

  • Surgical fixation when alignment or stability requires it

What recovery looks like

Healing time depends on the bone and injury pattern. Many fractures need 4 to 8 weeks of protection, followed by motion and strengthening.
