Overview

What it is

Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when the median nerve is compressed at the wrist.

Symptoms

It can cause numbness in the thumb, index, and middle fingers, nighttime tingling, weakness, or dropping objects.

How we diagnose it

An examination and, when needed, nerve testing help confirm the diagnosis.

Non-surgical treatment

  • Night splinting and activity changes
  • Corticosteroid injection when appropriate

Surgery

  • Endoscopic or open carpal tunnel release

What recovery looks like

Light hand use often begins within days. Incision healing usually takes about 2 weeks, while grip strength and nerve recovery may continue for weeks to months.

Common questions

Answers before your appointment

Do I always need surgery?

No. Mild symptoms may improve with splinting, activity changes, or an injection.

What is the difference between endoscopic and open release?

Both create more room for the median nerve. The incision and approach differ; your surgeon will explain which fits your situation.

Will numbness improve right away?

Night symptoms often improve early, but a nerve that has been compressed for a long time may recover gradually.

Do you accept workers’ compensation?

Yes. We also see commercially insured and personal-injury patients. Coverage is verified before treatment.
